LAKELAND, FL — During the second annual event, The Ledger announced the winners from their voting contest during a ceremony on Thursday evening Sept. 21st, 2017 at the R.P. Funding Center. We’ve all heard of the Oscars, the Grammys and the Emmys…. each award ceremony giving praise to specific genres of excellence through multiple industries and categories. The Ledger’s Best of the Best awards have made their mark as the standard of excellence in Polk County Local Business. The Ledger created Polk County’s Official People’s Choice Awards, also known as The Best of the Best, last year, in efforts to promote local businesses throughout the county. The contest allowed fans of the businesses & readers of the paper to vote for their favorites in 149 different categories under such headings as people and places, clothing and dining, home services, etc. Categories ranged from best sports bars to best roofing companies to best vetrinarians. The ...

Winter Haven native Chris Blue has won Season 12 of NBC’s “The Voice”   Blue faced off against contestants Lauren Duski, Aliyah Moulden, and Jesse Larson in Tuesday nights’ grand finale. The Team Alicia Keys star performed an energetic cover of Janet Jackson’s “Rhythm Nation” and wow’d the crowd through his stellar vocals and exemplary dance skills. “Chris Blue has been magic since the beginning! I’m so grateful to have witnesses his unbelievable artistry week after week,” Keys posted on Instagram. Later she announced that she would be leaving the show after this season; most likely to tour. To get to the final, Chris survived 26 competitive episodes, facing the top 24 contestants; all who had surpassed thousands of people that had auditioned for the show. BREAKING: Hostage Situation at McDonalds in Lakeland Ends; Suspect in Custody LAKELAND: Three males suspects were arrested following a standoff at the South Frontage Road / County Line Rd McDonald’s in Lakeland, Florida. The incident began in Brandon at about 7:30 a.m after deputies spotted the stolen car at 1608 Ladora Drive in Brandon, Hillsborough just before 7:30 a.m.  A pursuit followed and ended in Lakeland, with the suspects crashing at the South Frontage Road / Countyline McDonald’s. After crashing the vehicle, the suspects tried to carjack someone at the drive-thru window. A McDonald’s employee tried to close the window but the suspects jumped inside. Multiple law enforcement agencies and SWAT teams rushed to the scene. Both of the on and off-ramps from I-4 at County Line Road were shut down for over 3 hours. Daughter of Publix founder gives $800K TO FIGHT Florida medical marijuana amendment Well folks, she’s back at it again. Carol Jenkins, daughter of Publix Super Markets founder George Jenkins and founder of the Carol Jenkins Barnett Family Trust, JUST CONTRIBUTED another $800,000 (yes $800 THOUSAND DOLLARS) towards the fight AGAINST the medical marijuana amendment. Now, I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty positive there are plenty of other places and things throughout our great State that could really use even a portion of that money. Earlier in 2014, her trust also contributed $540,000 to the Drug Free Florida Committee.  A contribution that actually helped them lead a successful effort that year to defeat the proposed constitutional amendment. Because of that, medical marijuana remained illegal in Florida. Airlines Help Families of Orlando Victims

JetBlue Airlines Offers Free Flights As names of the victims; injured and deceased, start to be released, JetBlue Airlines is offering assistance the best way they can, free flights. The airline is graciously donating free flights to and from Orlando for the immediate family members, spouses and domestic partners of the victims of Sunday’s terrorist attack at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando. The carrier, who has strong ties with Orlando and trains all of its employees there, confirmed their offer today. “JetBlue is providing free seats on its available flights to/from Orlando for immediate family and domestic partners of victims who were killed or injured,” an airline spokesperson explained.   At least fifty people have been confirmed dead and many more are hospitalized or injured after the attack on the Pulse nightclub in Orlando.  Saturday was ‘Latin Night’ at Pulse, and many of the victims’ families live in Puerto Rico, which is another popular JetBlue destination. Workers now eligible for overtime pay under new regulations

Thousands of Central Florida workers now eligible for overtime pay under new regulations. The White House finalized a rule Wednesday that requires salaried workers that make less than $47,476 to be paid overtime if they work more than 40 hours a week. This more than doubles the old standard. Restaurants, retailers, and hotels will likely be impacted the most. The rules go into effect Dec. 1, 2016.
